The Theory And Hazard Perception Test

The theory test is made up of two parts - a multiple choice theory section and a hazard perception section. You will need to pass both parts before you can book your practical driving test.

Your Chiltern Learners instructor can help you with books/DVD's etc and you can take practice tests on-line via the DSA website.

To book your theory test you will need -
  • Your provisional licence
  • A debit/credit card for payment
  • Details of any special requirements

On arrival at the test centre you will need to register and show your provisional driving licence - you will need both parts. Take your booking letter with you, it tells you everything you need.

Once you are registered you will be taken into another room and shown to a booth with a computer. In the booth there are instructions on how to operate the computer, you even get a 15 minute practice session if you want it. So, nothing to worry about!!

When you are ready to take the test you will have 57 minutes to get at least 43/50 correct answers. All questions are multiple-choice and the computer is touch screen.

From 28 September 2009 some car and motorcycle multiple choice questions will be given as a case study. The case study will show a scenario that five questions will be based on. The subject of the scenario focuses on real life examples and experiences that drivers could come across when driving

Hazard perception testing begins automatically after the theory questions. A video will show you what to do and then the actual test will begin. This will consist of 14 x 1minute video clips. You respond to the hazards by clicking the mouse. The quicker you click when you can see the hazard the higher your score, but don't be tempted just to click away randomly!! There will be 15 hazards each carrying a maximum of 5 points. You will need to get 44/75 to pass.

You then go back to the waiting room to await your results; you need to pass both sections in the same session to get a pass.

When you have passed your theory and hazard perception test you have 2 years in which to pass your practical driving test before the theory pass expires.
